Investment push for Aras Kargo's transfer centre.
Aras Kargo, Turkey's leading and innovative shipping company, has ramped up its investment in technology and infrastructure, which was initiated before the pandemic. Aras Kargo, which has invested a total of nearly TL 300 million in IT infrastructure and operational arrangements over the past two years, completed the technological transformation of its Ankara transfer centre in 2020. The company, having transformed a total of 8 transfer centres together with Ankara, rised to the top in the industry with a threefold increase in hourly processing capacity.
Being among the shipping companies with the largest distribution network in Turkey, Aras Kargo pursues its efforts to revamp its transfer centres and reinforce its technological infrastructure with a view to managing time and capacity well. Aras Kargo, which carries an average of over 1 million shipments daily with a total of 28 transfer centres, has invested nearly TL 300 million in transfer centres, IT infrastructure and operational regulations over the past two years in light of increasing e-commerce volumes and changing requirements.
Aras Kargo General Director Utku Ayyarkın elaborated, " To begin with, we technologically upgraded the İkitelli Transfer Centre, one of the largest transfer centres in terms of both transaction volume and square footage, and increased its hourly capacity from 5,500 parcels to 27,600 parcels. In the first quarter of 2019, we technologically revamped our transfer centre in Orhanlı on the Anatolian side of Istanbul and in Izmir and transitioned to the sorter system. By making these investments in 8 transfer centres, including our transfer centres in Ankara and Anatolia, we have achieved a capacity increase of over 300 per cent."
220 thousand shipping processed in 1 day
Having completed the revamp of the Ankara transfer centre in 2020, Aras Kargo has increased the area of the transfer centre from 4 thousand 500 square metres to 10 thousand 500 square metres. The Ankara Transfer Centre, which formerly had a capacity of 5 thousand 500 parcels per hour, now sits at 16 thousand 600 parcels as a result of the renovation and technical infrastructure works, further improving the quality of service.
With the increase in capacity, the number of shipping parcels processed in one day at the Ankara transfer centre, where distribution to transfer centres in 28 cities takes place, peaked at 220 thousand.
1 billion TL Goal
Emphasising the important role of transfer centres in the shipping sector, Ayyarkın added that these centres can be described as the lifeblood of the distribution process. Ayyarkın highlighted that they rank among the best in the industry with a three-fold increase in hourly processing capacity following the investments made in the transfer centres whilst elaborating the following:
"The upcoming years will be accompanied by new investments in our existing transfer centres, as has been the case this year. Our goals for the coming period include a total of 1 billion TL more investment in transfer centres, IT infrastructure and operational arrangements. Starting next year, following the four major cities, we will focus on technological investments in our transfer centres in Anatolia."
