Aras Kargo, the pioneer shipping company in Turkey, planted 5,000 trees in 5-hectare area in Kemerburgaz within the ‘Yeşile Hayat Hayata Yeşil’ project carried out for five years in association with CEKUL foundation.
Having planted 133,000 trees in Anatolia so far, Aras Kargo turned to Istanbul aiming to repurpose an old mine in Kemerburgaz and to regenerate the natural life in the area.
Aras Kargo Chairman of the Board Evrim Aras delivered a speech at the tree planting ceremony and said, “Fighting against global warming is among the priority topics in our social responsibility activities. Within the scope of ‘Yeşile Hayat, Hayata Yeşil’ campaign carried out in association with CEKUL Foundation, we are repurposing ecologic areas that were lost due to various reasons and make them green again. This old mine located in Kemerburgaz was a barren field in which natural life couldn’t exist without being rehabilitated. We aim to restore this field as a green area by planting 5,000 different trees including nut pine, maritime pine and locust trees.”
Being an innovative and pioneer brand of the parcel delivery sector, this year Aras Kargo afforests Kemerburgaz area within the scope of its ‘Yeşile Hayat Hayata Yeşil’ project carried out since 2007 in association with CEKUL Foundation. Planting ceremony of the project which will afforest the old mine field in Akpınar Village, Kemerburgaz took place on Tuesday, May 8th.
Delivering a speech at the ceremony, Aras Kargo Chairman of the Board Evrim Aras said, “As Aras Kargo, social citizenship awareness occupies an important place in our corporate culture. We realize various social responsibility projects in education, sports, protection of cultural assets and the environment. Among these projects, environment and fighting with the global warming are our priorities. Within the scope of ‘Yeşile Hayat Hayata Yeşil’ that we have been carried out in association with CEKUL Foundation, we planted a total of 133,000 trees in Sivas Divriği, Kars Selim, Elazığ Sivrice and İzmir Seferihisar in accordance with the region’s topography. And now, we want to repurpose an old mine field in Akpınar Village, Kemerburgaz. In order to afforest the old mine fields whose number is rapidly increasing in our country, we need to bring trees and the forest back to these fields. Planting these fields will help us create hectares of forests, save our water supplies and regenerate the natural life in these regions. We aim to restore this field as a green area by planting 5,000 different trees including nut pine, maritime pine and locust trees. We turned this planting ceremony into a spring festival and brought our children with us. Raising awareness of younger generations on natural life and instilling the love of nature is as important for us as it is important for them.”
CEKUL Foundation Member of Board Tamer Müftüoğlu said, “Old mine fields with distorted topography are replanted within the scope of the rehabilitation action plan of Istanbul Regional Directory of Forestry and turned to its natural condition. With civil society’s efforts and support of the private sector, implementation of this action plan gains strength. We have been successfully cooperating with Aras Kargo for 5 years and planting trees in different regions of Anatolia. Now, we are back in Istanbul and planted nut pine, maritime pine and locust trees. Pine nut and maritime nut comply with the region’s conditions. Locust tree is planted with these pine species to accelerate the rehabilitation because it balances out the nitrogen level in the soil. Pine species that we have planted grow faster that other pine species, thus this area will be green in a short time and become one of Istanbul’s sources of oxygen.”
